Netflix has premiered the first trailer for “Shirley,” the new feature about the first Black congresswoman Shirley Chisholm starring Regina King in the role.
The film will follow Chisholm’s United States presidential campaign in 1972, the first Black candidate to seek a major party’s nomination for president and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.
Her campaign saw major youth engagement as she tried to gain enough delegates to speak at that year’s Democratic National Convention.
She faces setbacks along the way, and partners up with the Black Panthers at one point, all as she continues to pursue her goal despite the many obstacles in her way.
The late Lance Reddick along with Lucas Hedges, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Christina Jackson, Dorian Crossmond Missick, Amirah Vann, André Holland and Terrence Howard also star.
John Ridley (“American Crime”) directs the film which arrives on the service on March 22nd.
