Remedy Games has confirmed that it has expansion plans for its “Alan Wake” franchise following last year’s highly successful launch of the second main entry.
Remedy revealed on Friday that the game has sold 1.3 million copies, making it the studio’s fastest-selling game to date. In addition, it won multiple high-profile awards and was a Game Awards Game of the Year nominee.
The game’s release marked a successful end to over a decade of attempts to deliver a follow-up to the 2010 original. The company is currently working on two paid expansions – “Night Springs” in Spring 2024, and “The Lakehouse” presumably later this year.
The “Alan Wake” games share the same universe as 2019’s “Control,” and we saw some crossover with “Control” DLC. Remedy says “Control” has sold over four million copies since its release in 2019 and “Alan Wake 2” at present has sold over 50% more copies than “Control” did in its first four months.
The plan now is to grow this connected universe, and Remedy’s CEO Tero Virtala says in a statement they expect the game to generate excellent long tail sales:
“We are happy with the start of Alan Wake 2’s sales. The price point has also remained at a high level, and the game has already recouped a significant part of the development and marketing expenses.
We will continue to develop the game to serve existing fans and attract new players and expect the game to continue selling well.
We now have two established franchises: Control and Alan Wake, which are linked through the Remedy Connected Universe. Growing and expanding these franchises will be a key part of our future.”
In fact, Virtala says the success has been so good it has sped up the development of other projects they have in the works, including “Control 2,” the remakes of the first two “Max Payne” titles, and the “Control” multiplayer spin-off “Condor”.
