Asif Kapadia, the Oscar and BAFTA winning director of Amy Winehouse documentary “Amy” in 2015 and the Ayrton Senna one “Senna” in 2010, has set sights on a new subject.
He will take the helm of an as-yet-untitled feature-length documentary chronicling the final twelve days of sporting legend Roger Federer’s professional tennis career. Joe Sabia (“73 Questions”) co-directs.
The project has been greenlit by Prime Video and is described as an “intimate follow-along” of most of those last two weeks.
Originally short for a home video never intended for public viewing, it captures Federer “at his most vulnerable and candid self” as he says goodbye to the game that shaped his life for two decades.
Federer won twenty Grand Slam men’s singles titles in his time, third behind only Novak Djokovic (24) and Rafael Nadal (22), including a record eight Wimbledon wins.
Federer’s rivals and friends, including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray, were all interviewed for the feature.
Lafcadia Productions is backing the project which will be produced by George Chignell. The documentary is expected to release in July to coincide with Wimbledon.
