The musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” came in higher than expectations at the box-office this weekend, the film pulling in $27.7 million over the traditional Friday-Sunday weekend.
It is now on track for $51 million over the six-day stretch from Valentine’s Day this past Wednesday to the Presidents Day holiday on Monday.
That’s well above the early projections of a $30-35 million six-day haul being mentioned prior to release, likely fueled by superb word of mouth reviews from audiences who have embraced the film in a way the critics have not.
Overseas, the film took in an additional $29 million from 47 territories for an opening weekend global tally of $80 million – already overtaking its $70 million budget.
It easily beat Sony’s superhero tale “Madame Web” which came in second with $17.6 million over the traditional weekend and is now slowly spinning out to $25.8 million during the same six-day period domestically. It’s overseas haul is $25.7 million from 61 markets.
The numbers are dismal “Web” no matter which way you cut it. The film cost $80 million to produce and looks unlikely to make that back. Review scores are either on par or below that of “Morbius” and it’s box-office is definitely less. Audience scores are dismal and there’s no savior from overseas either.
Matthew Vaughn’s spy thriller “Argylle” was a distant third with $4.72 million over the three-day weekend. “Migration” was fourth with $3.75 million, and “Wonka” was fifth with $3.49 million. The latter has now passed the $600 million worldwide mark.
The overall Presidents Day weekend is looking to be the worst in modern history, sans pandemic-impacted 2021. Overall domestic revenue is roughly $75 million for three days and $89 million for four days – the lowest collective numbers since 1995 and a far cry from the highs of $346 million in 2019.
