By Donald Glover is currently enjoying the success of Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” series reimagining in which he stars alongside Maya Erskine. Debuting last week in full, the show has become the No. 1 series on Prime Video in more than 130 countries.
In addition it has been revealed It is now one of the top five new series debuts ever for Amazon in terms of total U.S. viewers, but specific numbers aren’t known as yet.
Out promoting the show, he touched upon his next foray into television – the long-in-the-works “Star Wars” series about Lando Calrissian’s younger years.
Last Summer came the news he and his brother Stephen took over writing duties on the show from filmmaker Justin Simien and in a new THR interview, he says having creative control is one of the biggest draws for him to reprise the role he first played in “Solo: A Star Wars Story”:
“I just know when something’s going to be good, because you’re really fighting the industry when you [put your imprint on a franchise of that magnitude], and it’s not like… I was going to say, and it’s not like I hate the industry… I feel like I have enough control.
And maybe you get painted as a control freak, but it’s like, yeah, control allows for the vision to be singular. And if the vision is singular, people want it more. The less it’s singular, the less people want it because they feel like they could’ve made it.
Look, we live in a time where anybody can f—ing make anything. You go on TikTok, there’s literally every type of thing. There’s documentaries, there’s puppetry, there’s yarn stop-motion. So why would you want to see something you feel like you could have made?”
Glover has no shortage of other projects he could jump to right now, including the long-awaited “Community” movie which is expected to film this year.
