Though Frank Herbert’s “Dune” novel doesn’t technically end on a cliffhanger, the nature of the work leaves some character and story threads open as it finishes.
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “DUNE: PART TWO”
Herbert’s subsequent shorter second book, “Dune Messiah”, on the other hand, gives us some fairly definitive and fitting closure for the Paul Atreides character. It also deals with the fallout of the first book’s events and offers a new perspective on the characters.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair (via The Playlist), filmmaker Denis Villeneuve says the ending of the upcoming “Dune: Part Two” will stick close to Herbert’s source material – even if that means leaving some questions unanswered.
He tells the outlet despite knowing where Paul’s journey goes in ‘Messiah,’ he won’t be doing anything to the ending other than what Herbert shows in that first book:
“The ‘Dune’ book ends with the beginning of something that is out of control, and I thought this was a very powerful ending. I feel that both movies complete the adaptation of the book, and I feel very good about that. When people ask me, is there a world where I could do ‘Messiah?’ Yes. I will respect again Frank Herbert’s idea to jump in time. That’s what I would love to do.”
Concern about that is why a bunch of the talk about the new film this week has been circling around whether Villeneuve will return to direct “Dune: Messiah”.
The biggest question regarding that seems to be less about if he’ll do it, but rather when he’ll do it and how long a break he’ll have first before tackling it. As ‘Messiah’ starts with a time jump he has some flexibility in that regard.
“Dune: Part Two” opens in cinemas on March 1st.
