In the wake of a busy past few days of rumors, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer says next week will see a “business update event” that should answer questions swirling about the future of Xbox.
In a posting on his Twitter account, Spencer says: “We’re listening and we hear you. We’ve been planning a business update event for next week, where we look forward to sharing more details with you about our vision for the future of Xbox. Stay tuned.”
The response comes in the wake of reports that multiple titles that were seemingly Xbox exclusive like “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle,” “Starfield,” “Sea of Thieves,” “Hi-Fi Rush” and “Gears of War” could be going multi-platform – coming to PS5, and in some cases Switch – just months after they hit Xbox and PC.
The rumours have sent the Xbox community spiralling with a bunch of questions about the future of the platform. Comparisons are being drawn to SEGA – transitioning from a hardware and first-party exclusives maker to a cross-platform game publisher.
Microsoft has made it clear in recent years it’s much more invested in progressing its services and getting its Game Pass software ecosystem in front of as many potential players as possible than pursuing new hardware or indulging in fanboy-driven console war talk.
The Verge adds that Microsoft was originally planning this business update for later this month but has moved up the announcement following the weekend’s events. Microsoft has yet to comment on the various reports.
