Amazon Prime Video indicated ads would be coming to their service, and users are now reporting that they have begun as of today.
In recent years some SVOD services like Netflix and Disney+ have added lower priced ‘with ads’ tiers to their service to compilment their existing more ‘standard’ and ‘premium’ ad-free tiers which cost higher rates but offer additional benefits (increased number of streams, 4K UHD, etc.).
Just after Christmas, Amazon announced advertising is coming to Prime Video but with a key difference – there will be no cheaper ‘with ads’ tier.
Instead, ads have come to standard Prime Video accounts and those who want the service to again be ad free will have to pay an additional $2.99 per month. So there’s no added value here, you’ll be paying more to get the same level of service.
The company has said it will have “meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers” but hasn’t gone into specifics.
How many will actually cancel Prime, or pay for the ads free upgrade, won’t be known for a few months as yet.
