USA Network’s “Suits” may have been cancelled years ago, but its still setting records – including one more this week.

Ratings giant Nielsen have announced their annual streaming rankings for the most watched series of the prior year and this Summer/Fall’s major “Suits” surge on Netflix and Peacock has claimed the top spot.

Armed with nine seasons of material to watch, the show racked up 57.7 billion minutes viewed in the year, coming ahead of Australian cartoon series “Bluey” in second with 43.9 billion, “NCIS” in third with 39.4 billion and “Grey’s Anatomy” in fourth with 38.6 billion.

Also making the top ten were “Cocomelon,” “The Big Bang Theory,” “Gilmore Girls,” “Friends,” “Heartland” and “Supernatural”.

All were acquired series. The best performing original series was “Ted Lasso” with 16.9 billion minutes, a surprise given the series is only available on Apple TV+ which doesn’t quite have the reach of the giants (Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and Max) that dominate these lists.

Netflix dominated the original series list with “The Night Agent” in second with 14.4 billion minutes, followed by female-skewing Netflix series “Ginny & Georgia” and “Virgin River”. Also making the list were “Love is Blind,” “Jack Ryan,” “Gabby’s Dollhouse,” “The Mandalorian,” “Outer Banks” and “The Lincoln Lawyer”

The movie list boasted multiple Disney animated features with “Moana” (11.6 billion) and “Encanto” (9.7 billion) on top. “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was third and the best peforming new release film at 8.8 billion minutes, whilst “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” was the best performing original movie that premiered on streaming with 6.3 billion minutes in tenth place.

Overall streaming grew by 21% in 2023 says Nielsen, the second straight year of over 20% growth. Streaming now makes up 36% of all TV use ahead of 30% for cable and 23% for broadcast.
