Now here is something interesting. Certainly, it seems to present a diversion from cape shit and beloved brands being rad-femmed for the sake of it. Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut movie Monkey Man.

The first trailer has just dropped, and it has a vibe that could almost make it seem like a companion piece to Patel’s breakout with Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionnaire. Jordan Peele is producing, and it was originally bound for Netflix but somebody clearly saw enough in it to give it a full theaterical release via Universal from April 5th.

Patel plays Kid, an anonymous young man who earns a meager living in an underground fight club. Night after night, wearing a gorilla mask, he is beaten bloody by more popular fighters for cash. After years of suppressed rage, Kid discovers a way to infiltrate the enclave of the city’s sinister elite.

As his childhood trauma boils over, his mysteriously scarred hands unleash an explosive campaign of retribution to settle the score with the men who took everything from him.

Patel co-wrote the script with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. It is said to be inspired by the legend of Hanuman. In Hinduism, Hanuman is a deity and revered as an avatar of Shiva and a devoted companion of the deity Rama. Hanuman is celebrated for his unwavering devotion to Rama.

Sharlto Copley is also in the cast, alongside Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Sobhita Dhulipala, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, and Makarand Deshpande.

Monkey Man is produced by Patel, Jomon Thomas, Jordan Peele, Win Rosenfeld, Ian Cooper, Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Christine Haebler, and Anjay Nagpal.
