Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal says he’s currently not entirely clear what’s going on with his character of Joel in the upcoming second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us” series.
Series creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman demonstrated with the series first season that though they stuck to the major story beats of the award-winning PlayStation game, they weren’t afraid to change things up.
In fact some of those changes, from those cold opens to the third episode “Long Long Time,” have been highly praised. With the story of “The Last of Us Part II” game being split over a second and third season of the show, and plenty more characters this time out, there’s theoretically more room to explore some tangents too.
Does this mean we’ll see more story involving Joel beyond what is in the game? Pascal tells Deadline that even those who know the games could well be surprised:
“I think that they’re always going to find ways to build on the incredible source material that they have, and surprise us with how they can use that material in a different format, like a television show, but I wouldn’t want to spoil it for anybody, and the truth is, I don’t actually have all of the information, as of yet.”
Pascal returns to the role in the series alongside Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. They will be joined by Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Manzino as Jesse and Isabela Merced as Dina.
The comments come as “The Last of Us Part II: Remastered” just launched on PS5 today as a $10 upgrade for existing users – check out the launch trailer below. A PC version of the game is expected to come later in the year.
