You know, I can’t believe the incredible sense of indifference I feel writing up yet more Star Wars news. It’s sad when something so beloved, so fundamental to my childhood, can barely elicit any interest. This is what they have done to Star Wars.
On top of the barely raised eyebrow when The Mandalorian & Grogu movie was announced was the weary sense of inevitability when the director of the upcoming New Jedi Order movies started spouting third-wave feminist claptrap. These days, Star Wars news feels like a footnote to be wrapped up and summarised in a single article like this.
So here goes…
Rey Returns
Daisy Ridley, reprising her role as Rey Palpatine-Skywalker in the aforementioned Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy-directed movies gave an interview to AlloCine. In it she said the movies will go off in a different direction:
“So I thought about it for a little bit, and once I knew what the story was and everything, I knew it was something I really wanted to do. I think it’s a really fantastic exploration of the Star Wars world. It’s a really cool way of taking the story on in a bit of a different direction.”
Will these movies ever see the light of day, given Lucasfilm’s apparent inability to get anything of substance off the ground these days?
What If…? Disney Didn’t Shit The Bed
Internet “scooper” DanielRPK has gone viral, being quoted online, suggesting that Disney is looking at Marvel’s What If…? animated series and thinking the same thing might be good for Star Wars. That show in an anthology series exploring what could happen in the MCU if certain key decisions or actions went a different way.
The response online has been predictably hilarious. No official confirmation from Disney or Lucasfilm, but if they are monitoring the response online then it won’t be comfortable reading for them.
Andor Done
One bright spot in the smoking wreckage of Star Wars that is Kennedy’s time in charge of Lucasfilm is Andor. Lead actor Diego Luna has confirmed that filming for the second season is nearly done.
Andor was heavily delayed by a strike that landed right across its planned production. Filming was halted several times. Following last night’s Emmy’s, Luna confirmed on the red carpet that he was off to the airport the following morning to get on a plane to the UK to finish shooting. He has just a few days left to shoot.
The second season of Andor isn’t expected to stream until sometime in early 2025.
