After the sheer amount of bank that Top Gun: Maverick made, this was inevitable. Paramount Pictures still has its relationship with Cruise. The Warner Bros. deal isn’t exclusive. So they will go all in on Top Gun 3.

According to Puck News, Top Gun: Maverick co-writer Ehren Kruger is currently writing a draft for Top Gun 3 that will reunite Crusie with co-stars Miles Teller and Glen Powell. Jerry Bruckheimer and David Ellison will return as producers alongside Cruise.

The report also says Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski will return at least as a producer, and potentially as director.

As for timings, Cruise is finishing up the last ever Mission: Impossible movie, and after that will apparently become the first civilian in human history to complete a spacewalk via his outer space movie at Universal for Doug Liman.

The report indicates he may sneak Top Gun 3 in before the space movie.

The real trick will be coming up with a way to get a 60-year-old pilot back inside a 30-year-old airplane in airspace contested enough for it to be a challenge, without annoying the Chinese again. Top Gun: Maverick had to deploy healthy dollops of plot in order to make the mission require an F/A-18 Super Hornet strike rather than a cruise missile attack, stealth bomber incursion, or sending F35s to do the job.

There is no 2-seat version of the F35, meaning those shots of the actors pulling real Gs in a real plane couldn’t be done without the F/A-18.
