Filmmaker David Bruckner (“The Ritual,” “The Night House”), who reimagined the “Hellraiser” franchise in 2022, is attached to both write and direct a reimagining of “The Blob” for Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.
The original 1958 film follows a red, amorphous and gelatinous alien lifeform that descends upon a rural Pennsylvania town and begins consuming anyone it comes into contact with – growing the more it eats and able to pull human victims into itself.
The project will mark the second remake of the original Steve McQueen-led movie (and its mostly forgotten Larry Hagman-led sequel “Beware! The Blob” in 1972).
The first was Chuck Russell’s 1988 film starring Kevin Dillon and Shawnee Smith and co-written by Frank Darabont. That version switched out the alien threat for one of a biological weapon.
It remains impressive to this day for its elaborate practical make-up effects, darker and more violent tone, and some gruesome imagery. Unfortunately it was also a box-office bomb, earning just $8.2 million from a $10 million budget.
Story details about the new version are under wraps. David Goyer and Keith Levine are attached to produce.
