According to a report in The Wrap, The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has announced that only 265 movies are eligible for the Best Picture Oscar this year, out of 321 feature films eligible for the 96th Oscars in general. The reason? Chief among them is DEI.
Unless they have opted out of best picture consideration themselves, films must meet two out of four requirements that aim to require fairer representation in on-screen roles or subject matter; key creative and other crew roles; paid internships or training opportunities; or jobs in a film’s marketing and distribution. The quotas must be hit.
These requirements are new for this year.
Movies that are in the pot for the Oscars but not for Best Picture include Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels. Marvel Studios may have decided to opt these movies out of the running for Best Picture themselves. On that basis, I would like to announce that I am opting out of the running to marry Mila Kunis, and it is with a heavy heart that I must withdraw myself from The Root Black Excellence Awards.
Also out of the running are Gareth Edwards’ The Creator, GameStop short stock film Dumb Money, Lopez-led assassin thriller The Mother, and Ruler Of White Women: The Movie, AKA Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour.
Nominations voting begins this week with the nominations to be announced on January 23rd, ahead of the interminable tedium of the ceremony on March 24th.
