British actress Glynis Johns, remembered for generations as the spirited feminist mother Winifred Banks in “Mary Poppins,” has died.
Johns was 100 and passed away in West Hollywood from natural causes at an assisted living facility in the area.
Actress, dancer and musician, Johns landed an Oscar nomination for her work as the widowed saloon owner in Fred Zinnemann’s 1960 film “The Sundowners”.
Other notable roles included Lady Penelope Peasoup in the 1960s “Batman” TV series, the lead of CBS sitcom “Glynis,” 1962’s controversial “The Chapman Report,” along with “The Sword and the Rose,” “Rob Roy: The Highland Rogue,” “The Court Jester,” “The Magic Box,” “Under Milk Wood,” “The Ref” and “While You Were Sleeping.
She was also a stage legend, winning a Tony Award for her work on Sondheim’s original 1973 production of “A Little Night Music”.
Married four times, Johns had one son, the late actor Gareth Forwood, during her marriage to Anthony Forwood. She has no survivors.
