Being a middle-aged father of two boys, I know more about Roblox and Fortnite than any man could ever hope to need. Along with YouTube and TikTok, these two games are almost completely responsible for the coming death of cinema as a pastime. The time-sapping attention sponges, funneled into their little brains from their devices, at least means the house is quiet right now so I can write this stuff for you, our beloved Outposters. So there’s that, I guess.

As Zack Snyder’s long-awaited and, according to the reviews, somewhat messy sci-fi epic Rebel Moon arrives on Netflix, he already has an eye on a potential future project. The director was out doing press for his latest release when he revealed that one property he would like to tackle is a movie adaptation of Fortnite.

First released just six years ago, in 2017, the free-to-play battle royale game is a cultural phenomenon among kinds of a certain age. It steamrollered its way to 125 million players in less than a year and made billions in revenue while hoovering up awards.

In a recent interview with eTalk, Snyder was asked about his love for the game and if that could ever be adapted into a movie:

“I mean, of course, I really wanted to make some Fortnite skins for [Rebel Moon], first of all, just as the most obviously basic involvement. But, yeah, Fortnite is an amazing world and it’s an amazing distraction, for me.

It’s really cool. The alchemy they’ve created there is really unique. When I started playing it, I thought I knew what it was and then it was something entirely different.

You definitely don’t know. You definitely can say never say never. That’s my mantra in this business.”

A Minecraft movie on the way from Warner Bros. starring Jason Momoa. As studios seek to replace superheroes with their next sure-fire hit and tap into a market that seems completely uninterested in their products, preferring instead to watch videos of other people playing video games in 4-minute chunks, then this may happen sooner than expected.
