Recently came the news that in the wake of the success of “Saw X,” an eleventh film is on the way and has already set a September 27th 2024 release date.

Lionsgate has revealed nothing else about the movie, but following that announcement came the reveal that writers Josh Stolberg and Pete Goldfinger of “Saw X” would not be returning – despite that entry scoring the best reviews of the franchise since the first.

A new interview with the film’s producer Oren Koules in SFX Magazine (via Screen Rant) now appears to have cleared up one question – where the new film will sit in the very convoluted timeline of “Saw”.

Not including the flashback moments, chronologically the films run “Jigsaw,” “Saw,” “Saw X,” “Saw II,” “Saw III,” “Saw IV,” “Saw V,” “Saw VI,” “Saw: The Final Chapter,” “Spiral: From the Book of Saw”. “Saw XI” sounds like it will slot in between “Saw X” and “Saw II”. Koules says:

“Cecilia is still alive, and Tobin and Shawnee are in a foreign country still. So that, to me, would be the natural place to take at least the next one.”

Cecilia serves as the main antagonist of John Kramer’s prequel story, the woman responsible for a fraudulent cancer cure which angers the dying Jigsaw (Tobin Bell).

In the same interview producer Mark Burg says a sequel set after “Spiral,” the furthest along entry in the timeline, isn’t likely anytime soon:

“Maybe one day we’ll come back to doing a sequel. Chris Rock would love to do one, but our focus, because of the success and the response to Saw X, is Saw XI.”

At this time, it’s unknown if Bell is returning for the new film.
