Filmmaker Christopher Landon (“Happy Death Day,” “Freaky”) has announced on social media that he is exiting “Scream VII” and will no longer direct.
Landon’s exit from the film comes after Melissa Barrera was fired shortly before Thanksgiving due to her social media posts on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
A day later it was announced that co-star Jenna Ortega would not reprise her role either due to the shooting schedule of the second season of “Wednesday”. In his statement shared on X, Landon says:
“I guess now is as good a time as any to announce I formally exited Scream 7 weeks ago, This will disappoint some and delight others. It was a dream job that turned into a nightmare. And my heart did break for everyone involved. Everyone. But it’s time to move on.
I have nothing more to add to the conversation other than I hope Wes’ legacy thrives and lifts above the din of a divided world. What he and Kevin created is something amazing and I was honored to have even the briefest moment basking in their glow.”
The time period of seven weeks puts his exit around the first or second week of November and around two weeks before the former “Scream VI” stars exited the project. Landon was first announced as being hired for the film in early August.
