Paramount Pictures’ new musical reboot of Tina Fey’s iconic teen comedy “Mean Girls” is looking set to be a hit.

The film, based on the Broadway musical, which itself was based on the original 2004 film, opens in three weeks time on January 12th – just in time for the four-day MLK holiday.

The movie has now appeared on early tracking projections today, and the result is it’s looking set to take in at least $27 million over the four-day run.

Awareness of the film amongst women of all ages is quite high for this point in time, and an opening that high in the post-COVID era for a film aimed directly at women is seen as a great start.

Considering the film was originally planned to be a direct to Paramount+ premiere, this is very good news for the studio. Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr direct the film.

The story follows new student Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called ‘The Plastics,’ ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika).

However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina’s crosshairs.

As Cady sets to take down the group’s apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school.

Also starring are Fey, Tim Meadows. Jon Hamm, Jenna Fischer, Busy Philipps and Ashley Parke.
