Whilst there’s no real “Spider-Man” or “Avatar”-sized juggernaut for the Christmas holiday this year, a quite large number of wide releases are out there and will be vying for audience attention this coming weekend.

Four new wide releases, and as many again in limited release, will open this coming Friday December 22nd. A few days later on Christmas Day on Monday, three more new wide releases will join them.

The seven wide openers over the break will be competing with the still quite hot “Wonka” which debuted to $39 million and is expected to have staying power. In addition “American Fiction” will expand to a wide release following a successful limited run this past weekend.

All other releases currently in cinemas however, from the “Hunger Games” prequel to Universal’s “Trolls Band Together,” are likely to get swept aside by the new waves of content – partly explaining why they made the jump to PVOD this week.

Of the newcomers, it’s James Wan’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” that’s likely to come out on top, with the superhero sequel projections on track to do around $40 million domestically and double that again internationally over the four-day Christmas weekend.

“Wonka” is likely to come in second with its second weekend four-day tracking to be in the just over $20 million range. Universal and Illumination’s animated film “Migration” is likely to come in third at around $15 million for the four-day.

The Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney-led rom-com “Anyone but You” is looking to land in fourth with $7 million, whilst A24’s Zac Efron-led wrestling dynasty drama “The Iron Claw” is targeting fifth with $6 million. Limited release sees “All of Us Strangers” and “Memory” joining the fray.

The three Christmas Day wide openers are still too early to call as yet but early projections suggest that the musical take on “The Color Purple” is looking hot and could well take in $8-10 million on Christmas Day alone.

George Clooney’s “The Boys in the Boat” will come in with a quieter $2-3 million for the day, but that’s far better than Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” which is already looking to crash and burn with just over a $1 million haul on Christmas Day targeted.
