DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has weighed in on one of the greatest debates in fandom of all time, one which will be highly relevant to his upcoming “Superman: Legacy” feature – trunks or no trunks?
The character’s signature red trunks, worn on the outside, were a key element of the character’s design in the early days but have come and gone in more recent times with their inclusion sometimes seen as old-fashioned.
On film, they were incorporated into Christopher Reeve and Brandon Routh’s outfits, but were not a part of Henry Cavill’s costume – Cavill did keep his chest hair which is in line with the comic but also another aspect often debated about.
Oh his Threads account, a fan asked Gunn to not incorporate trunks on the outside of Superman’s costume in the upcoming movie. This lead to the filmmaker discussing how much he’s heard passionate arguments from both sides:
“You wouldn’t believe the amount of pleading and upset I get based around trunks or no trunks. To me, not the most important aspect of Superman or his story. But so many strong feelings!
This might be an extreme point of view. The costume has changed in many, many ways throughout the years. They are all (or mostly all) valid versions of Superman, with or without trunks, with or without yellow S on cape, with or without black around the S, with or without mullet, and on and on and on.”
In other words Gunn is remaining non-commital on the trunks question for now. David Corenswet will take on the role of Kal-El/Superman in the film and will be joined by Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor along with Skyler Gisondo, María Gabriela De Faría, Sara Sampaio, Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan and more.
“Superman: Legacy” is set to open in cinemas on July 11th 2025.
