Dwayne Johnson is teaming with “Uncut Gems” and “Good Time” co-director Benny Safdie for “The Smashing Machine” at A24.
Safdie, who wrote and will direct the feature as his first solo directorial effort, has been developing the project with Johnson which will be a major dramatic role for the actor.
Johnson, who started his career as a professional wrestler, will play real-life mixed martial arts fighter Mark Kerr – a two-time UFC Heavyweight Tournament Champion.
Kerr’s story was previously portrayed in a 2002 HBO documentary also called “The Smashing Machine” which followed his rise through the fighting world with his no-holds-barred approach, and an addiction to pain killers that lead to an overdose.
A24’s Noah Sacco says in a statement: “Dwayne and Benny are singular talents, and their shared vision for Mark’s inspiring story is electrifying. We are deeply honored to have their trust as collaborators in bringing this incredibly special project to life.”
Johnson and Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions, Safdie’s Out for the Count banner, Eli Bush, David Koplan and A24 will produce. Johnson will next be seen alongside Chris Evans in the action comedy “Red One”.
