Disney Entertainment and Netflix are reportedly finalising an agreement that will see Disney licensing fourteen titles from its library of TV series to Netflix on a non-exclusive basis for eighteen months.
Major FOX hits “Lost” and “Prison Break” are returning after previously being available years ago, and will be joined by popular soap “This Is Us,” animated spy comedy “Archer,” USA blue sky series “White Collar,” medical drama “The Resident,” docuseries “ESPN 30 for 30,” and multiple sitcoms including ” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Reba,” “My Wife and Kids,” “The Hughleys” and the “Wonder Years” reboot will all hit U.S. domestic Netflix in their entirety next year whilst “The Bernie Mac Show” and “Home Improvement” will follow in early 2025.
Disney is set to launch its combined Hulu and Disney+ app for bundle subscribers in March. Under their new agreement, Hulu and Netflix will share the domestic streaming rights to “Grey’s Anatomy” for past seasons with Hulu being the only one carrying the new episodes from the upcoming 20th season.
The pact comes as “Grey’s Anatomy” has been seeing a “Suits”-like surge on Netflix in recent months – twice crossing the 1 billion minutes viewed in a week mark.
The news also comes as analytics firm Ampere Analytics has published (via THR) a new study that suggests the combined Disney+ and Hulu streaming service will own more popular content titles in the U.S. than any other streamer.
In addition, it would rank second in terms of programming catalog size behind only Amazon Prime Video – with 9,578 distinct movies and TV seasons as of Q3 2023 (Amazon is at 10,892, Netflix at 8,391, Max at 6,928, Peacock at 6,132 and Paramount+ at 3,606).
The combined offering will also feature one-third of the 100 most popular titles in the U.S. based on the latest popularity metric data. The next nearest would be Netflix with 29 and Max with 18.
