HBO Films has optioned the rights to Mark Chiusano’s just published new book “The Fabulist” about the meteoric rise of now-ousted congressman George Santos.
The film is dubbed a “forensic and darkly comic look at the crazy, unprecedented congressional race on Long Island” – a seemingly minor local race that led to Santos subsequently being elected to Congress.
It is said to be a “Gatsby-esque journey of a man from nowhere who exploited the system, waged war on truth and swindled one of the wealthiest districts in the country to achieve his American Dream.”.
The news comes as Santos’ political career hit the skids this week when he was expelled from Congress for alleged ethics violations. He has denied the charges.
Frank Rich (“Veep,” “Succession”) is spearheading the film’s development whilst Mike Makowsky (“Bad Education”) will pen the script. Both will executive produce whilst Chiusano will be a consulting producer.
Santos has attracted widespread attention over this year for apparent fabrications of his resume and background.
