Some more details are coming out about Ridley Scott’s highly anticipated “Gladiator” sequel which has restarted production after being stopped halfway through by the actor’s strike.
The project boasts Paul Mescal in the lead and co-stars the likes of Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Connie Nielsen, Djimon Hounsou, Matt Lucas and Derek Jacobi.
The story of the new film remains under wraps, though we do know Mescal plays a grown-up version of the child Lucius, son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen), from the first film. Lucilla was the former lover of Russell Crowe’s Maximus and Lucius is his son.
In a recent interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Scott offered some brief insight into Mescal’s character in the film which takes place almost two decades after the events of the original. He says we last saw Lucius when he was around 12 years old.
Mescal and the character are 27 and according to Scott, the character has “been out in the wilderness” for the past fifteen years and has “lost touch with his mother. His mother lost touch with him. She doesn’t know where he is. She thinks he might be dead.”
The film will take place around early 3rd century AD when brothers Caracalla (Quinn) and Geta (Hechinger) jointly ruled as Emperors. Caracalla was a bloodthirsty tyrant who ordered his younger brother’s murder shortly just months after their father died.
Washington is playing a former gladiator who won his freedom and is now rich – but still holds a grudge. “Gladiator 2” is set for release on November 22nd 2024.
