Last month during the 30th anniversary of the movie, filmmaker Henry Selick teased an idea for a follow-up to his stop-motion animated feature “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.
The original film follows Jack Skellington who is the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town. One day Jack stumbles into Christmas Town and, intrigued by what he saw, tries to incorporate its themes into his own town.
Though only a modest box-office hit, the film was a critical success and a cult hit. Selick says there are no plans in place for a potential follow-up even as he has an idea for one about how Jack became the King of Halloween Town.
However he says it’s up to Tim Burton to decide and that Burton feels: “why mess with that?”. Burton conceived and created the original film’s story and produced the film, so it’s up to him if one gets made.
In a new interview with Empire, it sounds like it will never happen as Burton says he is very much opposed to the idea:
“To me the movie is very important,” Burton said. “I’ve done sequels, I’ve done other things, I’ve done reboots, I’ve done all that s—, right? I don’t want that to happen to this.
It’s nice that people are maybe interested [in another one], but I’m not. I feel like that old guy who owns a little piece of property and won’t sell to the big power-plant that wants to take my land.”
Burton then proceeded to impersonate a grumpy old man (ala Eastwood in “Gran Torino”), saying: “Get off of my land. You pesky little… You ain’t getting this property! I don’t care what you want to build on it. You come on my property… Where’s my shotgun?”
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” is now available to stream on Disney+.
