With the success of Cobra Kai on Netflix, and the joy of seeing characters from our youth having new adventures, fans were surprised when a new Karate Kid movie was announced that appeared to have little to do with the world being created in the streaming show. Well, it appears that is not the case. The new movie looks like it will attempt to combine both the world of the original Karate Kid, continued in Cobra Kai, with the 2010 remake.

The 2010 remake may have nothing to do with karate at all, and just seem on the surface like a cynical cash grab against the name, while the Smith family pushes their offspring on us, but it is worth your time. It is a well-made movie and completely anchored by an absolute powerhouse turn from Jackie Chan in the Miyagi-like role.

Both Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan are going to reprise their roles in the new, upcoming movie from Sony Pictures. Over that, they are launching a global search for the star of the new movie, the new Karate Kid. This was all in a new announcement video launched just a few hours ago by Sony:

So, if your kid has some moves and you fancy offering them up to Hollywood for that full experience ranging from River Phoenix to Corey Haim, then get that audition tape ready!

This new project hails from the award-winning I’m Not Okay with This and The End of the F—ing World creator Jonathan Entwistle. He will direct from a script by Rob Lieber (Peter Rabbit). The studio says the new story will continue the mythology of the original franchise. There were rumors of a Miyagi-centric prequel. This is not happening. The new story will follow a teenager from China now living on the U.S. east coast. They find strength and direction via martial arts and a tough but wise mentor… because that’s kind of what has to happen in one of these movies.

Karen Rosenfelt is producing the film which aims to begin shooting in the Spring ahead of a December 13th, 2024 release. The final season of Cobra Kai films early next year too, so it is likely that they can shoot some scenes at the same time and cross over some cast.
