Focus Features has acquired the worldwide rights to New Regency’s “The Bikeriders” following its surprise abandonment by Disney’s 20th Century Studios.

Disney pulled its star-packed 1950s motorcycle drama from their release schedule a month ago with financier New Regency given the go-ahead to look for a new distributor. They now have one.

Disney’s dropping of the title was seen as odd given the Jodie Comer, Austin Butler and Tom Hardy-led film played the fall festival circuit and already had trailers in cinemas ahead of what was to be its December 1st release.

Plans are now for Focus to release the film theatrically in 2024 – Focus will handle the movie domestically, while Universal Pictures International will take over the overseas rollout.

Michael Shannon, Boyd Holbrook, Norman Reedus, Mike Faist, Emory Cohen, Damon Herriman, Beau Knapp, Karl Glusman, Paul Sparks, Happy Anderson, Will Oldham and Toby Wallace co-star in the film which hails from celebrated filmmaker Jeff Nichols (“Take Shelter,” “Loving”).

Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski says in a statement: “We are delighted to add such a riveting project to next year’s strong slate of films. We look forward to once again working alongside New Regency and reuniting with the multi-talented Jeff Nichols on another one of his visionary projects.”
