By The nearly two decades of attempts to bring back He-Man to the big screen in live-action form continue as Amazon’s MGM Studios is reportedly now in talks to mount the project.
Netflix scrapped their plans for a “Masters of the Universe” film back in July with the project declared ‘officially dead’ after close to $30 million had already been spent on development costs.
At the time the collapse was allegedly due to budgetary concerns, with the film looking to cost over $200 million even with relatively unknown Kyle Allen in the lead and with Adam and Aaron Nee (“The Lost City”) set as directors.
The Nees will reportedly need to close new deals for a script polish and to direct the project whilst Allen is still in the mix to star as He-Man. Todd Black is producing and the plan now appears to be seeking a significant theatrical release.
Several trade insiders indicate the budget for the proposed project is currently hovering at roughly $170 million.
The story of the franchise unfolds in the land of Eternia, where Prince Adam protects the secrets of Castle Greyskull from the evil Skeletor and his minions.
The property remains most famous for its iconic 1980s cartoon series. A previous 1987 live-action film starred Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, whilst Netflix is home to two animated series based on the property with Kevin Smith’s “Masters of the Universe: Revolution” second season arriving in January.
