Marvel Studios has premiered a ‘final trailer for “The Marvels” ahead of its release on Friday. Whereas earlier previews played up the more fun tone and girl power of the film, this tries a different approach.
Here the tone is much more in line with a Marvel Avengers-style feature – serious, focused on large scale and story, teasing a “moment that changes everything,” some sort of end of the line moment for one character, and dropping some shots and dialogue that hints at cameos.
The clip even reveals a minor one in the process so watch out if you want no spoilers. This marks a last-minute shift as so far much of the film’s marketing has centered on its body-swap comedy antics and mostly ignored its larger story and place in the overall MCU.
In the new film Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe.
When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau.
This causes them to physically swap places every time they use their powers. Together, however, this unlikely trio must team up and learn to work in concert to save the universe. Nia DaCosta helms the film which opens in cinemas Friday.
