Back in June, Disney Pictures confirmed a third “Hocus Pocus” feature was in development but it wasn’t clear where things stood with the project and how far into development it was.
With the writer’s strike now over, the movie’s screenwriter Jen D’Angelo has spoken with EW about where things are at with the story of what’s next for the Sanderson sisters. D’Angelo says:
“We’re still in the story phase, we’re still working on it. We’ve been working on some ideas. It’s been fun to dive back into that world and we have so many directions in which to go and so many new characters to explore.”
She adds that they have only scratched the surface of “Ted Lasso” star Hannah Waddingham’s Mother Witch character – the one who gifted the spell book to the young Sanderson sisters and was introduced in the second installment.
Waddingham’s return isn’t yet set but more of her past will likely be explored. That doesn’t mean the focus will shift away from Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy’s characters though:
“I’m hoping that we are able to explore every aspect of these stories and take these characters on a bunch of fun adventures. We don’t really know what it is, but we’re exploring all options and I think everybody is so delighted by the reaction that ‘Hocus Pocus 2′ got, and we’re excited to continue those stories.”
Anne Fletcher, who helmed the second film, is expected to return for the third. “Hocus Pocus 2” snagged 2.7 billion minutes watched in its debut weekend according to Nielsen, becoming the most-watched original film for Disney+ at the time.
