Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s “Five Nights at Freddy’s” has broken records with its start at the domestic box office.
The film adaptation of the video game series pulled in a massive $39.5 million on Friday, a number that includes $10.3 million in Thursday previews.
As a result, estimates now stand at the film taking in a record-smashing $78 million opening. That’s way above expectations and the third-biggest horror opening of all time behind the two “IT” movies.
It’s also the best opening ever for Halloween weekend among all films, the biggest horror opening of 2023 to date, and the second-biggest opening of all time for a video-game adaptation behind “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”.
Overseas the killer animatronics are slaying it too with the film tracking for an estimated $52 million from 60 markets. Thus its worldwide opening of $130 million surpasses “The Nun II” ($88.1 million) as the biggest global start for a horror film this year.
It’s also the biggest domestic and worldwide opening ever for Blumhouse. All this comes as the film debuted simultaneously on streaming service Peacock.
Critics have slammed the film but the audience is more onboard with an A- CinemaScore – horror films rarely get an A of any kind.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” looks to come in second domesticaly with an estimated $15 million for the weekend, whilst Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” will be third with $10 million.
