Netflix has several surprise hit films during the pandemic, most notably “Extraction” and “The Old Guard”. Both quickly scored greenlights for sequels.
“Extraction” shot its sequel in the first quarter of 2022 and released it June 2023. “The Old Guard” sequel was filmed in the third quarter of 2022, but so far there’s been no sign of it coming to the streamer.
Victoria Mahoney directed the film which sees Charlize Theron returning as Andromache of Scythia along with Schoenaerts, KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Van Veronica and Chiwetel Ejiofor. They’re being joined in this outing by Uma Thurman and Henry Golding.
During a recent interview with Collider for HBO’s event series “The Regime,” actor Matthias Schoenaerts says internal decisions at Netflix have kept the sequel from being released:
“We shot it approximately a year and a half ago, and I think they’re hitting the last stage of post-production. As far as I’ve understood, I think there’s been a switch at Netflix high up. I think there’s a different CEO, so that leads to a reconsidering of release, and how and when, and that’s not up to me. I don’t know. But I know we’re hitting the last stage of post-production, so it’s gonna show up at some point.”
The change he’s referring to is co-CEO Reed Hastings transitioning to the role of Executive Chairman of Netflix with former COO Greg Peters now stepping in as co-CEO beside Ted Sarandos.
Schoenaerts says the production experience was “lovely” and he’s “very curious to see it” as he hasn’t seen anything from it yet.
