Superman: Legacy has found its composer. These are massive shoes to fill. Hans Zimmer’s Man Of Steel score remains a high point of the now-defunct DCEU. Meanwhile, as everyone knows, John Williams’ Superman March is definitely one of the top five, probably top three, most iconic pieces of movie music ever written.
Director and co-CEO of DC Studios James Gunn revealed the news on social media. The next man to help Superman take flight and soar is John Murphy.
Murphy is a British film composer. He is a self-taught multi-instrumental musician who began his career in the 1980s, working with The Lotus Eaters, Thomas Lang, and Claudia Brücken.
He has collaborated with directors Danny Boyle, Guy Ritchie, Michael Mann, Matthew Vaughn, Stephen Frears, and Stephen Frears. He also already worked with Gunn on The Suicide Squad and Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3.
His awards include the Silver Award (1st Prize) at the Cannes Film Festival, a British D&AD Award, and a BMI Award.
Murphy gained recognition in the film industry while working with Ritchie on his film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, then went on to Mann’s Miami Vice, and Vaughn’s Kick-Ass. Some of his best known work among movie geeks will be for his work with Danny Boyle. His Adagio in D Minor from Sunshine is masterful and gets you right in the feels.
You might also be familiar with In the House – In a Heartbeat from 28 Days Later.
In a statement, Gunn welcomed Murphy to the DCU and said Murphy is already at work on the score:
“John was one of the first people I called when I finished the script many months ago as I knew how incredibly important the score was to this production. John has been working tirelessly since, creating hours worth of music that we’ll play on set as we shoot & use in the edit & that will eventually be recorded with a glorious symphony for all of you. Welcome to the DCU, John!”
Superman: Legacy will be released on July 11, 2025.
