A full seven months after it was pulled from the release calendar, it looks like Sony Pictures’ Universe of Marvel Characters (SPUMC) is set to revive “El Muerto” – the first Latino-led solo Marvel film to date.
The project had been slated to star Puerto Rican music sensation Bad Bunny in the role, but multiple delays both before and during the strike saw him exit over a scheduling conflict.
Variety, in a new feature piece about the future of SPUMC ahead of the release of “Madame Web,” indicates Sony has quietly resumed the development process for “El Muerto” and the hunt is on for a replacement to take the title role.
In the comics, El Muerto is Juan-Carlos Estrada Sanchez – a man from a long line of luchadors (wrestlers) who inherit a special mask that grants them superhuman strength and other powers.
Bad Bunny was seen as ideal for the role for both his international high profile as a musician, and his experience professional wrestling with WWE.
Sony has three SPUMC films coming this year including “Madame Web,” “Kraven the Hunter” and “Venom 3”. “El Muerto” likely won’t be getting a theatrical release until well into 2025 or later.
