By Filmmaker S.J. Clarkson is clearing up where her upcoming “Madame Web” film sits in the whole Marvel and Sony film canon.
As we know, the film is officially considered an entry in Sony Pictures’ Marvel Universe of Characters (SPUMC) and thus theoretically the same world as “Venom,” “Morbius” and the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter”.
We also know it’s a period film set in the very early 2000s with Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities and forges a relationship with three young women destined for futures as Spider-Women heroes.
Speaking with EW, Clarkson says the film is set in a standalone world and thus people can come in cold to the film as it was designed without any existing connections to either the MCU or SSU/SPUMC worlds:
“She’s definitely in a standalone world. I was able to just have free rein and let the movie be what it needed to be, as opposed to trying to force it into something else. That was a gift, in a way, to be able to take something and bring a fresh and I hope original take to it.”
There have been rumors swirling online ranging from Andrew Garfield or Tom Holland making a cameo, to the true identity of Adam Scott’s role, but much of that has been speculative.
Sony’s official synopsis for the film says this is a “standalone origin story” and even goes so far as to say “Meanwhile, in another universe” at its start.
