By “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” co-star Dolph Lundgren has confirmed what was expected – that the DC Comics-inspired underwater sequel was not the film director James Wan set out to make.
Reviews for the film saw it receive generally negative reviews from critics and audiences, with the film’s $375 million worldwide box-office haul thus far – a far cry from its $1 billion+ generating predecessor.
Out promoting his new film “Wanted Man,” Lundgren confirmed that he had a bigger role in the early cut of ‘Lost Kingdom’ but says that studio interference saw his role reduced – not unexpectedly as his scenes involved his character’s daughter Mera (Amber Heard).
As a result, he suggests as her part in the film was limited so was his. He tells ComicBook.com:
“I just realized that it was some kind of corporate decision that they try to limit Amber Heard and then I’m playing with her dad and went along with it.
I was just disappointed for the moviegoers, because I thought the original script was great and the original cut — I saw a little bit of it, it was really good, so I didn’t see any reason to start reshooting and reshaping the story, which obviously led to disappointment in the moviegoers and not just me.”
Just how much was reshot and how much of the original cut survives isn’t clear. Lundgren also spoke about one of his other most famous roles – He-Man in the 1987 live-action “Masters of the Universe” film. Would he ever return to the role?
“[An] Older He-Man? I don’t know. As long as… my costume can be a little more substantial. It was about the size of a stamp, in those days. I think I’d just have to add a few layers of costume.”
Lundgren’s “Wanted Man” hits digital stores on Friday.
