By Double Oscar winner Denzel Washington is seemingly done with filmmaking – not as an actor, but as a director according to fellow filmmaker and collaborator Spike Lee.
Washington has helmed four feature films in his time – “Antoine Fisher” in 2002, “The Great Debaters” in 2007, “Fences” in 2016, and “A Journal For Jordan” in 2021.
Whilst “Fences” was an Oscar success story, “A Journal for Jordan” was mostly forgotten about – pulling in largely negative reviews and making just $6.7 million of box-office from a $25 million budget.
Participating in a Directors on Directors conversation for Variety, Spike Lee and Bradley Cooper spoke with each other during which Lee revealed that Washington is ‘done’ with filmmaking.
After Cooper brought up “Fences,” Lee said: “He says he’s done…directing.” Cooper said: “Really? he said that?” to which Lee replied yes. Cooper then said: “No kidding, how do you even know that?” to which Lee laughed.
Lee has directed Washington in roles across four of his films – “Mo Better Blues,” “Malcolm X,” “He Got Game” and “Inside Man”. Washington is showing no signs of slowing down his acting and is currently filming Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator” sequel.
