One thing that separates the first “Ghostbusters” from any of the films that have come along since is its tone.
Yes it’s a comedy, but plenty of sequences in the original film also take their time with the build up of suspense and scares. There’s lengthy tension building scenes such as the librarian ghost in the early parts, the capture of Slimer at the hotel, and some still creepy stuff involving the demon dogs.
It’s a notable difference to the second film which seems less horror-focused and more kid friendly – same goes for both the 2016 and 2021 films.
With “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” opening in March, director Gil Kenan is aiming to bring back that darker sensibility it seems according to co-star Kumail Nanjiani. The actor tells UPI:
“There’s some really, genuinely scary stuff. The scary stuff is actually scary. The danger is very real and the stakes are very high. That makes the comedy even funnier.”
Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson and Annie Potts co-star in “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” in which the old and new “Ghostbusters” teams must save New York City from a powerful chilling adversary.
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” hits theaters on March 29th 2024 – just in time for the franchise’s fortieth anniversary.
