Ever since Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts*, we’ve known that the Marvel Cinematic Universe currently has two sets of Avengers, two versions of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, who don’t necessarily get along. Sam Wilson’s Avengers and the New Avengers are sure to clash in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. But for years now, a group of youthful heroes have been assembling to join the fight, a group that will eventually become the Young Avengers.
The end of The Marvels showed Ms. Marvel meeting up with Kate Bishop a.k.a. Hawkeye to recruit her to the team, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania gave us the size-shifting Stature, and Agatha All Along introduced Billy Kaplan/Maximoff, the magical Wiccan. Now, the first set of posters for the Disney+ series VisionQuest introduces not just Vision and Ultron (in their human forms), but also the latest Young Avenger, Billy’s brother Tommy a.k.a. Speed, played by Ruaridh Mollica.
As with Billy, the very existence of Tommy raises questions. After all, WandaVision showed us that Wanda Maximoff used her hex powers to create her sons with Vision, the twins Tommy and Billy. When Monica Rambeau finally broke through the hex surrounding the town of Westview that she captured, Wanda had to give up her children and admit they were fake. Furthermore, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed Wanda visiting other realities to find her children, which only reinforced the idea that they don’t exist on Earth-616.
So where did Tommy come from? We won’t know for sure until we see VisionQuest, but Tommy probably exists in the same way that Billy came to be. As we saw in Agatha All Along, the spirit of the Billy conjured by Wanda came to inhabit the body of Billy Kaplan, a teenager who died in a car accident. At the moment of Kaplan’s death, Billy Maximoff’s spirit found the empty body, allowing him to exist as both people at once. Surely, VisionQuest will show us that something similar happened with Tommy’s spirit after the events of WandaVision.
Unsurprisingly, this outrageous concept comes more or less from the pages of Marvel Comics. The twins made their first appearance as infants in 1986’s The Vision and the Scarlet Witch #12, inadvertently created from fragments of Mephisto’s soul. They were eventually reabsorbed by Mephisto and erased from Wanda’s memory in Avengers West Coast #52 (1989). However, when the Young Avengers debuted in 2005, the members included Wiccan (initially a Thor-based hero called “Asgardian”), who slowly revealed himself to be Billy Maximoff. In Young Avengers #10 (2006), Billy is joined by Tommy, who has white hair and superspeed powers, taking the name Speed.
In the comics, Tommy and Billy survived their reabsorption into Mephisto thanks to the intercession of Immortus—a Variant of Kang the Conqueror, who fought alongside the Young Avengers as a teenager calling himself Iron Lad—and M’kraan, the living embodiment of a crystal with the powers of the Phoenix from X-Men. These forces allowed the twins to resurrect by, as with their MCU counterparts, initially becoming different people: Billy Kaplan and Tommy Shepherd. Only later in life did they gain their powers and their memories of their identities and relationship to one another.
Confused? Well, given that VisionQuest will deal with a resurrected Vision and with Ultron somehow in the form of a bearded James Spader, the MCU version may not be much easier to understand. But at the end of the day, Tommy’s existence brings us one step closer to the formation of the Young Avengers, which is a good thing—the heroes are going to need all the help they can get to deal with Doctor Doom.
