While I was growing up in New York, my dad was a diehard Giants fan. He took me to several games throughout my youth, would often win big money betting on the world-famous football team, and would often speak about his fandom for one particular player: John Tuggle. My dad played ball in high school; he’s even got a “four touchdowns in one game” story. I’ve seen the newspaper clippings about that game. So, imagine my surprise when Paramount Pictures debuted a trailer for Mr. Irrelevant, a biopic focusing on Tuggle’s inspirational journey.
Becoming “Mr. Irrelevant”
Before earning his iconic moniker, Tuggle was a standout running back for the California Golden Bears, earning team MVP honors in 1982. Despite his collegiate success, he went largely unnoticed by NFL scouts until the final pick of the 1983 draft (335th overall), making him that year’s official “Mr. Irrelevant.”
A Legacy That Outlived the Gridiron
Rather than fading into obscurity, Tuggle arrived at training camp determined to prove he belonged. Through pure grit, special teams dominance, and a relentless work ethic, he won over rookie head coach Bill Parcells and secured a spot on the 53-man roster. Tuggle went on to play in all 16 games of his rookie campaign, winning the team’s Special Teams Player of the Year award. Tragically, during the 1984 off-season, Tuggle was diagnosed with angiosarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Even as he fought the disease, his determination deeply moved his teammates; during their 1986 championship season, the Giants honored his legacy by wearing his No. 38 decal on their helmets as they went on to win Super Bowl XXI.
Bringing the Journey to the Big Screen
Mr. Irrelevant captures this incredible true story, starring David Corenswet as Tuggle. A true underdog, Tuggle defied expectations on and off the field for Parcells (Michael Shannon), his newfound love (Isabel May), and his team, proving that hope can transcend even the greatest challenges.
In addition to the trio, Mr. Irrelevant stars David Krumholtz, Tuwaine Barrett, Thaddeus LaGrone, Alexander England, Spencer House, and Tandi Wright. Jonathan Levine directs from a script by Nick Santora. The film huddles up in theaters this Christmas, giving audiences something truly special to look forward to alongside holiday festivities.
