One of the strangest online rumours this week has been answered – the Tom Cruise-led and Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed dark comedy “Digger” is NOT a musical.
Speculation has swirled in recent days that Warner Bros. Pictures was doing what Paramount did with “Sweeney Todd” almost twenty years ago – namely hiding the fact that it was a musical for those unfamiliar with the stage play.
The recent final trailer exacerbated this with shots of Cruise on a rotating platform and scenes in which background actors appeared to have their mouths open while singing.
Now, Variety has spoken with two sources familiar with the production, who say “Digger” is not a movie musical. The film has yet to be widely screened.
Shot on 35mm VistaVision with Emmanuel Lubezki lensing, the film also stars Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg, Sophie Wilde, Emma D’Arcy, Robert John Burke, Burn Gorman and Pip Torrens.
Cruise stars as a powerful man trying to convince the world he’s its saviour – before widespread destruction caused by the catastrophic consequences of his own actions. “Digger” will screen only in cinemas from October 2nd.
