By Get Smart, Again…Again!
The James Bond/spy genre spoof Get Smart may be dialing Warner Bros. for a new reboot/reimagining. Not only that, but John Mulaney is looking to land the role of Maxwell Smart, which was formerly played by Don Adams. Warner Bros. is developing a reimagining of the spy comedy, created by Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. The studio has Seth Grahame-Smith currently working on the screenplay. Grahame-Smith recently wrote the magic heist sequel Now You See Me: Now You Don’t. Chuck Roven and Andrew Lazar are on board to produce, but there has not been a star announced to fill the shoes of Agent 86. According to Deadline, four-time Emmy Award-winner John Mulaney is aiming for that role and hopes not to miss it by much.
Control
Mulaney is a good candidate as he shares Adams’ penchant for straight-faced, monotoned comedy. In Get Smart, Agent 86 was a spy for Control, which was a government agency whose nemesis was the villainous outfit called Kaos. The original series ran for 138 episodes from 1965 to 1970. The first four seasons of the series aired on NBC, but the final season would migrate over to CBS. Per Deadline, “Don Adams starred as bumbling know-it-all agent Maxwell Smart (Agent 86) opposite Barbara Feldon (Agent 99) and Edward Platt, who played the Chief. They work for a secret U.S. government counterintelligence agency called Control, which was in a constant battle with evil org, Kaos. While Smart always has the upper hand over Kaos, he often was incompetent. Get Smart won seven Emmys including two for Outstanding Comedy Series.”
Get Smart with Steve Carell
The last time the property was adapted, Steve Carell would step into the role of Maxwell Smart, while Anne Hathaway played Agent 99. The Get Smart movie came out in 2008 and was helmed by Peter Segal, whose credits include Tommy Boy, The Naked Gun 33 1/3 and Grudge Match. Dwayne Johnson co-starred in the film in his first role not credited as “The Rock” and Alan Arkin played the Chief. Roven and Lazar would also produce the film and the movie would open with $38.6 million stateside and made $130.3 million domestically, and $230.6 million worldwide.
