A season finale can get away with leaving a few unanswered questions when everyone assumes another batch of episodes is coming. The problem starts when a network or streaming service has other plans. Some shows have introduced new characters, revealed alternate realities, put their heroes in serious danger, or completely changed everything viewers thought they knew, only to get canceled before explaining any of it. In a few especially painful cases, the writers even ended the episode with an explicit promise that the story would continue.
