Monica Barbaro (“One Night Only,” “A Complete Unknown”) and Margaret Qualley (“The Dog Stars,” “The Substance”) are said to be the leading candidates to play the female leading role alongside Tom Holland in the upcoming Fred Astaire biopic at Sony Pictures.
Holland will take on the role of the legendary tap dancer, singer and actor for “Paddington” and “Wonka” filmmaker Paul King. Production is slated to begin in January.
Page Six Hollywood (via WoR) broke the news of the female lead casting with the two candidates being considered for Adele Astaire – Fred’s older sister, who performed and danced with him in vaudeville shows and on Broadway.
Helping is that both Barbaro and Qualley are classically trained ballet dancers. Holland recently confirmed that he will not use a double in the Astaire biopic and that he intends to do all the dancing himself.
Amy Pascal is producing the film, which has been a passion project for Holland, but has taken years to get to the point of actually filming.
The movie also has been the subject of minor controversy as the Astaire estate claims Fred explicitly stated in his Will he did not want his life story to be depicted on screen.
