LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian Review: The Funniest Star Wars Recap You Didn’t Know You Needed

REVIEW: After three entertaining seasons of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, I found myself asking: Do we need LEGO: Star Wars The Mandalorian? Shockingly, the answer is a resounding yes! At only 45 minutes, Disney’s new LEGO Mandalorian is not only worth every minute of your time, but it’s some of the most fun I’ve had with the Star Wars franchise all year.

LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian does not mess around. It’s precisely as advertised: a hilarious build-a-brick retelling of three seasons’ worth of The Mandalorian, plus a recap of The Book of Boba Fett to include some of the crossover between the two adventures. From the moment LEGO‘s The Mandalorian got going, I could not look away. Admittedly, I had my phone out, ready to send an overdue text or two during any downtime in the presentation. For the duration of the special, I never thought about picking up my phone, and I still haven’t sent those texts. Sorry, Mom.

While the content of LEGO’s new special is all too familiar after watching all the Mando-related content Disney+ can throw at me, it’s presented in such a fun, funny, and creative way that I could not help but keep my eyes glued to the screen. It’s been a rough week, but LEGO’s The Mandalorian made me forget about everything for nearly an hour, filling my overwhelmed head with nothing but light-hearted jokes, side-splitting callbacks, and spirited voice performances from many of the franchise’s original players, making me feel like everyone was in on the gag.

The special’s animation isn’t as polished as a feature-length LEGO movie, but the stop-motion presentation isn’t without charm. I quickly warmed to the limited range of motion and minimalistic effects. The special reminds me of an extended Robot Chicken sketch, or someone on YouTube going to great lengths to recreate the events of The Mandalorian using their LEGO playsets. Some fans might want more from a LEGO-branded special, but it was perfect, and I wouldn’t change a thing.

In addition to being fun to watch, LEGO’s new Star Wars special is sidesplittingly funny. The 45-minute recap is jam-packed with uproarious nods to the original series. It includes plenty of Easter eggs for eagle-eyed viewers, like homages to The Simpsons and jabs at fans who called Grogu “Baby Yoda” for months instead of waiting to learn his actual name. The jokes are consistent, coming at you a mile a minute as the special’s breakneck pace never lets up.

It’s also a lot of fun to have so many of the original stars reprising their roles, like Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto, Bill Burr as Migs Mayfield, Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze, Giancarlo Esposito as Moff Gideon, and so many more. Everyone involved in the show is unafraid to take the piss out of their animated counterparts, making the whole special feel like a well-meaning roast of a galaxy far, far away.

If you want an honest-to-goodness recap of The Mandalorian, forget watching the season recaps and watch this instead! I guarantee you’ll laugh your ass off as LEGO presents the Cliff’s Notes of the franchise with good humor, quirky visuals, and as much heart as you get from watching any other canonized Star Wars presentation.
