Mattel Films, Paramount Pictures, and Temple Hill Entertainment are teaming for a film adaptation of the “American Girl” 18-inch doll line.
Lindsey Anderson Beer (“Pet Sematary: Bloodlines,” “Sierra Burgess is a Loser”) is attached to write the screenplay and produce the project.
Mattel previously partnered with MGM for an attempted film adaptation back in 2019 which didn’t take off. Hot off the success of “Barbie” though, Mattel is keen to get moving on more adaptations of its product line.
The property has previously been adapted to the screen with numerous direct-to-DVD films and telemovies executive produced by Julia Roberts. Only the Abigail Breslin-led “Kit Kittredge: An American Girl” back in 2008 ever scored a theatrical release.
Robbie Brenner, President of Mattel Films, says in a statement:
“American Girl is a beloved franchise, rich in history and storytelling with millions of devoted fans. Through dolls, books, live experiences, and television movies, the brand has captured hearts for decades. We are excited to continue Mattel Films’ momentum and collaborate with Paramount Pictures, Temple Hill Entertainment, and Lindsey Anderson Beer to bring American Girl to life on the big screen.”
The obvious question here is if the film will have the same appeal as “Barbie,” something that’s unlikely with the brand nowhere near as ubiquitous – especially in overseas markets.
