Hollywood has never exactly been famous for being a drug-free workplace, and some movies have suspiciously convincing stories about what was happening behind the camera. Actors have, in some cases at least, openly admitted using drugs during production; in others, directors, co-stars, or production accounts have backed up the stories.
As you might expect, plenty of these claims are considerably murkier than internet folklore makes them sound. So rather than treating every rumor as fact, these examples focus on productions where there is at least some documented reason to believe drugs were actually involved. The results range from surprisingly casual marijuana use to some genuinely extreme examples of method acting.

Easy Rider
The famous campfire scene in Easy Rider has an unusually authentic detail: Peter Fonda later confirmed that he, Dennis Hopper, and Jack Nicholson were smoking real marijuana during the scene. He specifically rejected the persistent rumor that they were taking LSD.

Good Fortune
Seth Rogen has openly discussed using real marijuana during at least some movie scenes. In a recent interview, he recalled actually smoking with Keke Palmer during a film, admitting they smoked enough over repeated takes to become genuinely intoxicated.

Grandma’s Boy apparently went beyond the usual fake cinematic weed. According to Nick Swardson, Peter Dante was initially handed fake marijuana, decided to supply his own, and repeatedly took real bong hits during retakes until he reportedly couldn’t feel his legs.

The drug use in The Panic in Needle Park was so realistic that the movie became notable for apparently featuring actual drug injection. However, that doesn’t mean the stars were shooting heroin; Kitty Winn’s famous injection scene used saline instead.
Black Metal Veins
Black Metal Veins is a particularly extreme case because it is a documentary rather than a conventional fictional movie. Released in 2012, it follows five people addicted to heroin, documenting their lives and substance use with disturbing directness.

The Blues Brothers has one of Hollywood’s most infamous drug-production stories. Dan Aykroyd said the production had money set aside for cocaine during night shoots, while John Belushi’s escalating cocaine use became a serious problem during filming.

Carrie Fisher’s condition while filming the Star Wars Holiday Special has become legendary, with repeated accounts describing her as extremely stoned. However, this is better treated as a long-running anecdote than firmly documented production fact.

John Reynolds’ bizarre performance as Torgo in Manos: The Hands of Fate has a particularly strange explanation. IMDb’s trivia section records cast and crew recollections that Reynolds was on LSD during filming, supposedly explaining his twitching and confused behavior.

Shia LaBeouf admitted taking LSD while preparing for The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman, explaining that he wanted to understand an acid trip for the character. Rupert Grint later recalled seeing LaBeouf’s extreme behavior while filming.

Super Troopers wasn’t necessarily filmed while its stars were high, but its premise grew from the filmmakers’ own experiences. Steve Lemme said the group frequently traveled while under the influence and wondered what would happen if humorous cops encountered them.

Ben Foster took performance-enhancing drugs while preparing to portray Lance Armstrong in The Program. Foster said he did it under medical supervision because he wanted to understand the experience personally, while acknowledging that these were serious chemicals he wouldn’t recommend.
