Paul Greengrass’ new film “The Uprising,” starring Andrew Garfield, has undergone a title change two weeks out from its release.
The film will now go by the name: “The Uprising: Rise of Robin Hood”. Promo materials have now been updated to reflect the change.
The move has surprised people, as it outright confirms it is an origin story for the fictional folk hero rather than just a straightforward take on the 14th-century English Peasants’ Revolt.
It marks just the latest in a series of title changes for the film. Initially, it was “The Hood” and would’ve starred Benedict Cumberbatch, then it became “The Rage” with Matthew McConaughey linked. Then last year it became “The Uprising” as Garfield boarded.
Garfield stars as Ploughman, the leader of a ferocious rebellion against the tyranny of King Richard II (Woody Norman). The film is said to be set against the true events of the Uprising that helped inspire the legend of Robin Hood as the man forms an army of the people to face the King’s might in a fight for justice.
Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller and Katherine Waterston co-star.
The film follows in the wake of the Hugh Jackman-led “The Death of Robin Hood” which looked at Robin Hood towards the end of his life and living in self-imposed exile. A24 released the movie in June to mixed reviews and poor box-office of just $11 million worldwide.
Focus Features will release “The Uprising: Rise of Robin Hood” in cinemas on September 11th.
